Cancer survivor turning scars into inspiration
Breast cancer survivor Marcia Adams has transformed some of life’s most difficult moments into a mission of hope, creating hand-painted coconut shells, denim artwork and handcrafted bags that she believes can inspire others to keep pushing forward.
Through her brand, Beauty Lies Within, Adams uses her creativity as a reminder that strength can emerge from adversity.
Adams said immersing herself in her craft became a source of comfort after her diagnosis, allowing her to focus her energy on creating pieces that could uplift others. She said each item she makes carries a message of encouragement.
“I was thinking about what I could create to inspire someone out there. Every time they wear one of my pieces, I want it to remind them that inspiration comes from within,” Adams told THE STAR.
Last Friday, Adams brought her creations to the spotlight at the Christmas in July trade show held at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel. As one of her models walked onto the runway wearing one of her pieces, Adams rushed to the front and lowered herself to the floor to capture what she believed was the perfect image.
For Adams, showcasing her work is more than a business opportunity — it is a reflection of the determination, sacrifice and resilience that shaped her journey.
“After putting in so much effort into my craft, with long hours and sleepless nights, and being a breast cancer survivor who has gone through so many obstacles, I have to get it right so people can truly see it,” she said.
Her path into art was unexpected. In 2016, while attending classes at the Jamaica Foundation for Lifelong Learning, Adams discovered a creative outlet she never imagined would become her passion.
She had enrolled to complete academic subjects but soon noticed an art class being offered at the institution.
“It was mainly painting and regular beads, but I started challenging myself and the inspiration just kept coming. I created so many beautiful pieces that people loved,” she recalled.
“I would just create whenever an idea came to me. People kept asking if I made the pieces because they loved the concepts so much. They encouraged me to keep creating.”
Although she remained committed to academics, Adams said her artistic vision continued to pull her in another direction.
“It wasn’t easy, but there was just this voice pulling me towards the dream and the vision I wanted to pursue. Sometimes I had to step away from classes to pour into the business, and they allowed me to come back.”
With encouragement from her loved ones, Adams officially registered her business in 2018. Family members and friends helped provide materials that allowed her to begin building her dream.
“My support system showed up. Family and friends helped me with materials, and I took that and made a bigger investment in the business.”
Looking back at the obstacles she overcame, Adams believes every setback was part of a greater purpose.
“When I look back on my life, the turns, the obstacles and everything I have accomplished despite all of that, it has to be the way the Creator wanted it to be,” she said.
“Even now, when I have challenges in the business, things just fall into place at the right time.”
However, the greatest test of her strength came in 2021 after the birth of her son. Following complications caused by retained placenta, Adams spent about a month making repeated hospital visits for treatment.
